Informative days about citizens’ access rights.
Oct 21, 2009

Dear all,

We would like to inform you about one interesting event that happened in the center of Skopje. In the last period TAI Macedonia has been conducting the National Campaign regarding the citizens’ access rights. Besides broadcasting a four-month radio spot, On 18th, 19th and 20th October we organized informative days about citizens’ access rights. Informative stands and banners were set up at five locations at the main square in Skopje containing messages and slogans about The Access Initiative Macedonia.

The objective of this campaign is raising awareness of the citizens, the local authority and the governmental institutions regarding the implementation and improvement of the access to environmental information, public participation in the process of making decisions regarding environmental issues and access to justice in cases when the above mentioned access rights are violated.

An event of this kind is organized for the first time in Macedonia. The citizens, businessmen, administration, media, governmental public officers and even some members of the Parliament got the opportunity to get information about TAI ‘s global network and its activities in Macedonia. This refers to the access to information and the way the same can be obtained. It also refers to the way in which the citizens and the local self-government can contribute in order to involve the public in the process of making decisions which means access to justice in the field of environment.

Not only did this event enable consultations about access rights but it also enabled direct contact with the public and distribution of informative material in various forms.

2000 leaflets containing information about access rights were distributed in the public; 1500 leaflets mainly included information about The Access Initiative, the organizations within in and the objectives and achievements of TAI Network in the world; 2800 cards about environmental rights were distributed so that the citizens can submit claims to the institutions or our organization; 1100 stickers were also distributed so that the citizens can put them on visible locations in order to raise public awareness.

Finally, we would like to express my gratitude to WRI and American Embassy in Skopje for the given aid and support.

Kiril and Vesna
