7 latinamerican TAI partners participated in the Latinamerican and Caribbean preparatory meeting for Río 2012
Sep 12, 2011

We hope this information is useful to you: • After the negotiation process governments agreed upon this paragraph included in the final document of the meeting “States from the region indicates that is necessary to reach commitments regarding the full implementation of the rights to access to information, participation and justice on environmental issues established in the P10 of the Rio Declaration”. TAI partners from latinamerican are quite frustrated because previous to the meeting we have achieved that the draft Declaration prepared by ECLAC for the governments discussion to be held in Santiago included a strong paragraph about the need to start a consultation process to see the viability of a regional convention for the region. Governments in general didn`t like the idea to discuss this draft, so they started their deliberations without a draft to oriented and focused the discussion. There are no concrete and/or specific commitment in the Santiago Declaration. • Some of the good news are: o Olimpia Castillo from Mexico and Verónica Cipolatti from Argentina were both speakers representing the NGO major group during the meeting. o We introduced TAI and the result of the 3DCampaign to most of the participants at the meeting, both governmental and non-governmental. o We contacted Mara Trujillo, UNEP latinamerican Director and Claudia De Windt, OAS Sustainable Development Director to learn about their plans for Río2012.

As next steps TAI/LA will coordinate with WRI the participation of TAI latinamerican partners in an OAS roundtable on the issue of public participation in Washignton DC next October where we can channel our proposals for Río2012.
